Our mission is to support young people to develop alongside and inspire each other through the Pipe Band tradition and its music. As a National resource and a representative of Scotland as a leader of the art-form, we develop inclusive pathways to excellence.

Who we're here for
The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland is a place where young musicians from across the country come together to learn, grow, and create something amazing. Whether you're just getting started, ready for a new challenge, or looking to take your playing further, the NYPBS Ensembles Programme is your opportunity to work with top tutors, meet talented young players like you, and perform on national stages.
If you’re a piper or drummer aged 10 to 25, living in Scotland, and ready to take your music to the next level—this is for you.
We welcome players from all backgrounds and experience levels, whether you're part of a local or school band, involved in a major pipe band system, or playing on your own in a rural area. NYPBS is a space where LGBTQ+ musicians, disabled players, and young people from underrepresented backgrounds are valued and supported.

Is NYPBS for you?
When you join NYPBS, you become part of a vibrant national community of young musicians. You'll be placed in one of our national ensembles, carefully matched to your playing level, where everyone contributes and grows together. NYPBS Sessions are creative and inspiring. They are not standard band practices - they are designed to help you explore music in new ways.
You’ll play a mix of original compositions and reimagined traditional tunes, all specially arranged for your group. Along the way, you'll work closely with expert tutors and industry mentors who are there to guide, challenge, and support you.
As part of the experience, you’ll develop new musical and personal skills, build your confidence, and take the stage in a major national concert alongside peers from across Scotland. Most importantly, you’ll meet young players from all over the country and become part of a supportive community that lasts far beyond the final performance.

This is your invitation - Join us!
This year, for the first time, we’re introducing a participation fee to help keep the NYPBS programme financially sustainable. But our commitment to equity hasn’t changed—this programme is for everyone, not just those who can afford it.
Auditions are completely free, and we offer travel bursaries to help with costs. Participation fees are tiered, so you’ll only pay what you can afford, and instrument loans and other support may also be available if needed. Most importantly, no one will be excluded because of cost.
If you're ready to be part of NYPBS, we’ll work with you to make it possible.
